The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez will host the XXVII Interuniversity Seminar on Research in the Mathematical Sciences (SIDIM) on March 2 and 3, 2012. The SIDIM is an annual gathering where researchers, professors, teachers, graduate and undergraduate students share and discuss their recent work in mathematics and computer science. Its diverse and intense scientific program provides an interesting cross section of the current status of mathematical research in Puerto Rico. Math faculty and students from all the higher learning institutions in Puerto Rico, as well as distinguished visiting mathematicians will participate in the meeting.

Activities will include

  • Plenary Talks by

  • Concurrent sessions of individual talks and research posters in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics Education;

  • Research poster sessions for students;

  • Special Sessions on

    • Problem Solving

    • Mathematical Biology

    • Topology in Dimension Three

  • A Math Graduate School and Summer Institutes Fair. This is a singular opportunity to connect with undergraduate & graduate Hispanic-American students interested in furthering their education in the mathematical sciences. Institutions participating in the Fair have consistently identified and recruited talented minority students for undergraduate research experiences, internships, graduate school, and even post doctoral positions.

  • Exhibition booths for math book publishers and computer companies.

This year we will be awarding The MBI Conference Award for the best talk. This award, sponsored by the Mathematical Biosciences Insitute, is a full travel award for the winning untenured junior faculty, post-doc or graduate student to attend one MBI workshop of their choice in the 2012-2013 academic year.

The SIDIM’s history has been closely intertwined with the growth and development of our department. We hosted the first SIDIM and have successfully organized five previous editions of the Meeting. We are proud of the important contributions made by some of our most senior faculty and other mathematicians in the island so that the original meeting could be held. We are happy to see that these efforts to promote mathematical research activity in Puerto Rico have fruitfully produced 26 uninterrupted years of SIDIM activities. For us, hosting the XXV SIDIM is a special homecoming. We enthusiastically invite the mathematical community to join us by submitting the SIDIM’s electronic registration form. General information on the organization and logistics of the XXVII SIDIM will be posted on this website. Additional information on the scope and history of SIDIM may be found at the Permanent SIDIM Committee webpage.
